Object Permanence

The way that most  infants minds work is, out of sight is also out of mind. This is until they reach a milestone, Object Permanence that they realize the object still exists even if they can't see it. There are a few steps in reaching and understanding object permanence. The first is:
Birth to 1 Month:
  • the infant can't follow objects. The eyes will develop over time.
1 Month to 4 Months:
  • They eyes can follow the moving object but they can't see it if it is not there.
4 Months to a Year:
  • Infants will search for a missing object in the place where they object usually appears.
1 Year:
  • Child learns the concept of object permanence and search for a hidden object.
Of course the times on these are not see in stone each kid is different. But this is way when you play peek-a-boo will some children they start looking for you being your hands or some babies love they game because they can't see you and it's exciting for them when you jump out from around your hands.

Until the Infant learns this concept, nothing exists out of the field of vision.

Synesthesia

This week in class we talked about Brain Disorders. We learned that not all of them are a bad thing. 2 that we learned about that do not seem like a necessarily bad thing are Savant Syndrome and Synesthesia. The other ones that we learned about that aren't the ideal to have are Parkinson's, Congenital Analgia, Autism, and the one that my group researched, Epilepsy. One that caught my eye was Synesthesia. Synesthesia is having your senses crosses. For example: You would hear colors, taste words, and smell images. It's crazy to me all of these letters would be in different colors to someone who has Synesthesia. For instance this sentence would look like this. Hello, my name is Alyssa Bunday. The following website shows what one person sees with her case of Synesthesia.
http://www.visualizing.org/visualizations/grapheme-color-synesthesia-map?utm_source=synthesiaexact&utm_medium=PPCGOOGLE&utm_campaign=DATAVIZSEM

Like i mentioned before most people think that this isn't a bad thing because your good at spelling because each letter has a certain color that you always see when you see that letter. Or when your tasting food you associate it shapes. In the video we watched in class the girl said that her soup tasted square. So Mr. Drier said that people often become chefs because they can associated food very well together.
I think that my mind would go crazy seeing all of these things flashing through my brain all the time and having my senses almost like re-wired. But, i can see how people could use this in there advantage and it would be a good thing.

Left or Right?

Your brain is separated into 2 halves, the right and the left. The concept of right brain and left brain thinking developed from the research in the late 1960s of an American psychobiologist Roger W Sperry. The left side of your brain controls the rights side of your body and the right controls the left side of your body. Typically many people are stronger with one side of the brain than the other. Each side of your brain controls different things.
Left: (Verbal)                                                Right: (Visual)
Logical                                                          Creative
Mathematical                                                 Artistic
Works in liner sequences                               Sees the big picture
Rational                                                         Intuitive
Analytical                                                      Random
Objective                                                      Takes risks

By looking at the list of each many can tell what they are or what they think others might be. There are ways to find out exactly which side of your brain is more dominate. The following website will take you to a test to help you figure it out. http://www.wherecreativitygoestoschool.com/vancouver/left_right/rb_test.htm

The right and left brain concept is ways that you learn and interpret things. If your left handed does not mean the your right brain is dominate. You use both hands to do things so the brain doesn't know dominance.

If your right or left brained doesn't mean your better than the other it's just the way you learn. When both sides of your brain work together your get a better learning experience.

Ethics

The other day in class we learned about Ethics in Psychological Research. We reed through experiments we learned what it meant to be ethical or not. Ethics are: "the rules of conduct recognized as appropriate to a particular profession or way of life." Knowing what is ethical and what is not is important when you run test on human to research something. We talked about 6 different guidelines for Human Research Participants these you should think about when running a test, they are:
  1. Consent
    1. Being the researcher you must obtain a consent for the participant. basically you need to have a written document saying that the participant agreed to do what they were told. you must always make sure they know exactly what they are getting them self into and you have to be aware of limited understanding and accommodate to them.
  2. Deception
    1. You need to avoid lying to the participant whenever possible, sometimes you may not be able to avoid it. You may not lie to the point that when you tell them what you lied about they will have objection or feel uneasy.
  3. Debriefing
    1. After the the data has been collected you must explain everything that has happened. After you have told them what has happened they need leave in the same state that that they arrived in.
  4. Withdrawal
    1. You have to inform the participant that they can withdrawal from the experiment at any point in time and it must be made clear.
  5. Confidentiality
    1. Unless the agreement states otherwise all of the experiment has to be kept confidentially between the participant and the researcher.
  6. Protection
    1. The participant must not have any mental or physical damage done during the experiment, going back to number 3 they must leave in the same state they entered in.
If you don't know all of these things before you decide to take part in Human Research you might take part in unethical activities and not know all of your rights.
I learned a lot about telling if experiments are ethical or unethical and what my rights are during the research project.
